It forms the interface between the slit or aperture, and the supporting platform, column or beam. The strut system permits roll, pitch and yaw and is also available with additional motions: X, Y, and Z. Long focus travel is possible by means of mechnical or air linear bearing type stages. The McPherson strut type slit manipulator rotates our UHV Flexure Slit or Aperture about the center of the slit jaw opening, and allows for motion along the beam (focus). All adjustments and mechanisms are outside of the vacuum. This feature keeps the mechanisms easily accessible and away from the heat during baking. Rugged construction can handle loads of 200 lb.

All motions of the manipulator are constrained by struts with spherical bearings at each end. Six struts are required to fully constrain the system. Adjustments to various struts, or pairs of struts, effect specific motions. Manually adjustable systems have reference dials with 100 increments per revolution. Due to the geometry of the manipulator, one increment of the dial produces the displacements specified above (for roll, yaw and focus.)

		Linear Air or Mechanical Bearing Slides are available for mounting slits that require substantial or frequent translation to maintain focus. Precise, slide systems can be configured to meet your requirement and provided complete with structural support, motor and encoder drives, slit mounting, etc. Please inquire.
Strut Mount Platform with a different geometrical arrangement of struts. As shown in the photo the struts are best suited for providing X, Y and Z motion. The line drawing at the top of the page, with the struts shown with a bias angle, is better suited to Roll, Pitch and Yaw positioning.
